Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Breathedsville, Maryland. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in such testing. Our centers are available nationwide to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. Hair assessments can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options.

Recently, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Hair tests suit zero-tolerance workplaces and probation oversight, boasting a detection span of up to 90 days with minimal tampering risk. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer a prolonged history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the advancing hair strand. When obtained close to the scalp, hair may reveal nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Collecting it is straightforward, relatively tampering-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, further tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair comprises all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four crucial stages in the laboratory processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to negate drug consumption on most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any specimens presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a specimen is presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is retrieved from the initial sample and geared for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Tough to evade: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: Offers insight into the pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually scrutinizes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Breathedsville, MD, hair follicle testing trumps urine tests, offering superior detection and reliability. Urine tests can miss prolonged drug use; however, hair tests provide insight into an individual's habits up to 90 days. This long window helps organizations maintain drug-free environments. It's nearly impossible to falsify results, ensuring hair testing's dominance over conventional methods for comprehensive screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Breathedsville, MD, boast an extended detection window, giving employers insight into substance use over three months. Unlike urine tests with short detection times, hair tests capture a more substantial view of an individual's drug history. This period allows for more informed decisions, ensuring hiring and retention of substance-free employees, ultimately benefiting organizational culture and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Breathedsville, MD, tamper-resistant hair follicle tests offer unparalleled security against sample adulteration. Providing reliable results, these tests ensure the authenticity of the sample, protecting against cheating. Employers can trust the integrity of the results, confident their drug testing program stands on solid ground. This reliability is vital in maintaining a transparent and compliant workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
