Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bridgeport, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and has centers in every city across the USA to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or elsewhere may be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specified hair testing needs.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has increased, with many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts opting for these over usual urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations are utilized by employers with zero-drug-tolerance rules, legal entities, and those on probation. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its protracted detection window of up to 90 days, conducted through an observed collection method, making it nearly cheating-proof. Nonetheless, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers, hair provides a prolonged history of alcohol and drug presence. When taken near the scalp, it offers an estimated 3-month timeframe for detection of alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. In cases involving EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample within a laboratory’s system. This phase includes ensuring the sample’s secure seal and proper shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage across most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples yielding presumptive positives during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug testing as the most intricate approach.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized to confirm any positive screening find. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The entire sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests for drugs can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a more limited detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: A hair drug test is exceedingly difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical substance use profile: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
