In Brock Hall, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. When requiring a hair or alcohol test, our specialty in hair analysis serves your needs with testing facilities spread across various cities Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or, in some cases, body hair is essential. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

The trend in drug testing has leaned towards hair follicle assessments recently. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer this method over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are chosen for their zero-tolerance accuracy by employers, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. Key advantages include a longer drug detection timeline of up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and difficulty in tampering. For detecting recent substance use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record for alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to around three months for substance use. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended that the specimen be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Other types of hair, like facial or axillary, fall under the category of body hair.

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the introductory processing of a specimen within a lab’s framework. This comprises checking that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data recording absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a primary swift evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Any specimens with presumptive positivity during Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

When a specimen shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby rendering hair drug screening challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and conforms to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Merits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenges in evasion: It's exceedingly tough to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Historical data provision: It delivers a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
