At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Brownsville, Maryland. If a hair or alcohol test is necessary for you, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled, with testing centers nationwide prepared to conduct your analysis. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probation officers utilize them primarily due to the long detection period of up to 90 days, observed collections, and the challenge of tampering. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing strands, hair offers an extended timeline for detecting substances. When collected from the scalp area, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, equating to around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), gathered nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all additional types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is structured into four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed and entered into the laboratory's system. This encompasses checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though cost-efficient and useful for negating drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is essential for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is more challenging to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods execute the Confirmation of any positive screening outcome. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory operation, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating the results of a hair analysis is exceedingly difficult, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a record of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Brownsville, MD, offers several advantages over the traditional urine tests. One of the primary benefits is its superior detection accuracy, which allows for the identification of substance use over extended periods. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to a shorter window, hair tests can reveal drug use patterns that were previously undetected. This feature makes hair testing a more effective tool for employers aiming to uphold drug-free policies.

The reliability of hair follicle testing also surpasses that of urine tests. While urine samples can be tampered with, hair samples provide a secure and consistent method for drug testing. This reduces the risk of false or misleading results, ensuring that employers receive an accurate picture of an employee’s substance use history. Hair tests thus place a strong emphasis on accountability and thoroughness.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Brownsville, MD, offers a significant advantage for employers. Capable of identifying drug use over a period of up to 90 days, it provides a comprehensive view into an individual's substance history. This long detection window allows businesses to assess long-term patterns of behavior, ensuring that they make well-informed decisions regarding potential candidates or current employees.

Employers benefit from the extensive timeline that hair follicle tests offer, as it allows for a broader evaluation of drug use. Rather than focusing on isolated incidents, this testing method highlights consistent patterns, which is crucial for maintaining a safe and drug-free workplace. By utilizing this method, employers can ensure that they are selecting and retaining individuals who align with their substance policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly minimizes the risk of tampering in Brownsville, MD, making it a reliable choice for accurate results. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are difficult to adulterate, ensuring the integrity of the sampled material. This feature provides employers with confidence, knowing that the results they receive are genuine and reflective of the individual's true substance use history, free from manipulation.

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing also alleviates concerns about sample substitution. Since hair is collected in an observed setting, it limits the opportunity for individuals to alter or replace the sample. This safeguards the accuracy of the test, providing unquestionable results for employers who must ensure compliance with strict substance policies. Thus, this method reduces discrepancies and enhances reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
