In Brunswick, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need a drug or alcohol analysis using hair samples, our experts specialize in this testing method with centers across the country, ready to cater to your needs. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from either the scalp or body, allowing us to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for drug screening. Organizations including businesses, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine samples. These tests are favored by those with zero-tolerance drug policies and used to monitor individuals on probation due to their prolonged detection window, usually up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that offers a high degree of reliability, although for the most recent five-day drug use, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of hair, approximating 200 strands or the width of a #2 pencil, near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair—ideal for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent amounts of body hair might be gathered. "Head hair" refers to scalp hair only, while "body hair" includes other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.)

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within the lab system. This ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for illegal drug use. While cost-efficient and effective for most specimens, a positive screening outcome must be validated to be permissible in legal settings. Samples with presumptive positives from Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, a larger portion of hair from the original specimen undergoes preparation for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited for compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can discern drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a brief detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: Offers a drug usage pattern over time rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent use: Detecting drugs in hair typically requires 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brunswick, MD, hair follicle testing eclipses urine tests with superior detection capabilities. Hair tests detect substances up to 90 days prior, compared to the shorter window for urine. This extended detection period provides a clearer view of an individual's substance history, advantageous for employers aiming to enforce drug-free workplaces, offering a significant edge over traditional methods.

Furthermore, the process is nearly impossible to tamper with, unlike urine testing, which can fall prey to deceit. The reliability and precision of hair testing make it a trusted choice for those seeking comprehensive solutions to substance monitoring, reinforcing its stature as a leading testing method in Brunswick.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Brunswick, MD, makes it a powerful tool for assessing long-term drug use. With the ability to identify substances ingested up to 90 days prior, hair tests offer a broader perspective on an individual's behaviors compared to other tests. This long-range insight is vital for employers and legal entities needing a complete history of substance use.

The comprehensive view provided by hair follicle testing supports informed decision-making processes. By delivering deeper insights into past drug use, businesses can foster safer, more compliant environments, addressing potential issues before they lead to bigger challenges, thereby maintaining a healthy workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Brunswick, MD, hair follicle testing is lauded for its tamper-resistant properties. Unlike other methods, hair tests significantly minimize the chance of sample adulteration, ensuring the resulting data is both reliable and indisputable. This integrity is crucial for maintaining high standards in drug screening processes.

By utilizing a secure collection process, hair tests thwart attempts to manipulate or falsify results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
