In Cabin John, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide equipped to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body may be utilized. Hair tests offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, implementing drug tests has increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are turning to hair-based methods instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation regularly utilize hair follicle testing. An extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and low likelihood of tampering are its main advantages. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now considered an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting timeline of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When procured near the root, hair offers roughly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the root yields 100mg, the ideal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair can't be collected, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug analysis consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves verifying that the sample is securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any more data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of concern. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, any positive indication must be validated for legal acceptability. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be provisionally positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial collection for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentration levels than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirming any positive screening outcome employs techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug testing is hard to falsify, enhancing the integrity of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a record of drug use over a span of time, beyond just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods, hair follicle testing in Cabin John, MD, surpasses traditional urine tests in multiple dimensions. The benefits are clear, from detection accuracy to reliability, offering a superior alternative.
Longer Detection: Hair testing can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests assess recent usage.

Cheating Risk Reduction: Hair tests include an observed collection process, making it difficult to tamper with the sample, unlike urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
