At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Cardiff, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialty in hair testing is supported by accessible testing facilities in cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head is necessary, but body hair can often be used as well. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and bespoke hair testing solutions.

In recent developments, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are ideal for organizations enforcing zero-tolerance substance policies, legal institutions, and probation requirements. Hair follicle tests offer the advantage of a longer detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and with minimal risk of evasion. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the superior method for identifying drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a significant resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' structure. When gathered near the scalp, it provides roughly a 90-day window for detecting substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedural framework in processing a drug test result encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with integrating a sample into the lab's framework. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any necessary data absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening is an expedient initial assessment for abuse substances. Although cost-efficient for excluding substance use in most cases, a positive finding must be corroborated to be valid legally. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for Extraction. This phase retrieves drugs at lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), showcasing the complexity of hair drug evaluations.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used to Confirm any positive results post-Screening. Any sample presumed positive is pre-washed as required before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, every stage is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidance and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug usage for up to three months, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: Provides a record of drug usage over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Hair needs about 5-7 days to show drug presence.
  • Expense: Generally costlier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Variables like hair color and growth can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as “hair follicle tests,” the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cardiff, MD, hair follicle testing is preferred over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. Providing a more reliable and accurate approach, hair tests reduce false negatives and effectively identify drug use patterns. Unlike urine tests, hair tests capture a wider timeframe of substance use, helping employers maintain a safer workplace environment.

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests reveals drug use trends that might be missed by urine tests. This comprehensive insight empowers employers with better information to uphold workplace policies, ensuring a drug-free environment and enhancing overall employee safety standards.

Extended Detection Window

Cardiff, MD employers benefit significantly from the extended detection window provided by hair follicle testing. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, this method offers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, unlike shorter-term methods like urine testing.

This broad overview assists employers in making well-informed hiring and retention decisions, by highlighting long-term substance use patterns. Employers gain valuable insights into an individual’s history, helping to ensure a safe and compliant workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Cardiff, MD, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant approach to drug screening. The methodology ensures minimal risk of sample adulteration, as hair samples are collected under stringent guidelines, making it difficult to alter results. This leads to trustworthy outcomes, providing confidence in testing results for all parties involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
