Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle tests for drugs and alcohol in Cecilton, Maryland. Specializing in hair sampling, we have centers across the nation that facilitate these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now often prefer these over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are sought by workplaces with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. Their main advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection making it hard to falsify results. For detecting drug use in under 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol use within an approximate 3-month timeframe. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to determine the sample's weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with integrating a sample into a lab's system initially. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid evaluation for drug substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most complex method.

Any positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumed positive samples undergo cleaning as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a drug usage trend over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are required for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistency: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
