Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chaneyville, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with testing centers across all cities nationwide that can conduct such tests. For most cases, individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body available. Hair tests can be configured to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing options.

Over recent years, the use of hair follicle drug tests for drug screening has significantly increased. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers. The major advantage of hair drug tests lies in their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, in combination with an observed sample collection process that makes cheating almost impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for uncovering usage of substances like drugs and alcohol. It offers a comprehensive overview of substance consumption through the capture of biomarkers in hair fibers. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to around 90 days. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, with reduced potential for tampering, and is simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) sourced near the scalp will weigh around 100mg, which is the preferred amount for both initial screening and further verification. For EtG analysis, additional testing, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can serve as a substitute. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis for drug test results comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into the lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to remain legally valid. Any samples testing positive in Screening demand a follow-up confirmation.

Upon a positive Screening result, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for further processing during the Extraction phase. Drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques carry out Confirmation of positive Screening results. Washing of presumptive positive samples occurs before confirmation as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the full laboratory process adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing is capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with limited detection durations.
  • Challenging to fake: It is exceedingly difficult to alter a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers use patterns: It provides insights into patterns of substance use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detection of substances in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
