Accredited Drug Testing is a provider of comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and has facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair testing covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been used for substance screening. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair tests offer a significantly extended detection window of up to 90 days and are almost impossible to manipulate, whereas urine tests remain the most reliable choice for detecting recent drug use, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for substances such as alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we reference scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample's seal and proper shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid check for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be suitable for legal proceedings. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample seem positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test as presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color or individual hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand instead of the hair follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Chesapeake Beach, MD, stands out when compared to traditional urine tests. While both methods are essential, hair testing offers enhanced detection accuracy over longer periods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
