Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Chesapeake Ranch Estates, Maryland. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in this field, with testing facilities in every city Nationwide to carry out a hair test. You typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body for the test. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been used as a favored method for drug screening. This type of testing is now being mandated by many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists rather than the traditional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, court officials, and probation officers widely use hair follicle tests. Their main advantage is the extended drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and it involves a direct observation collection, offering nearly cheat-proof results. For more accurate tests of drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling has increasingly been acknowledged as a potent method for revealing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair entraps biomarkers within the strands’ fibers as they grow, offering an extended history of substance use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can offer up to roughly a 3-month window of alcohol and drug detection. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings over 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps entailed in the lab analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finishes any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an expedited preliminary check for drugs of abuse. This step is a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug use in most samples, but any positive result needs confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other forms (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging to execute.

Confirming any positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are appropriately washed before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, much longer compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering results in a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows past consumption patterns: It outlines a timeline of drug use rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs typically do not appear in hair until about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests come with higher costs compared to other testing options.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Though often dubbed as “hair follicle tests”, the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
