Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessment in Chevy Chase Section Three, Maryland. Seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation? Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair assessments, with locations across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body are required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine assessments. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation now utilize hair tests. This method's primary advantage is its extended drug use detection timeframe, often up to 90 days, and it's resistant to tampering. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, the hair sample can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, hard to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We propose measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair is collectable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary management of a sample into a lab’s database. This encompasses checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further information input not given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift preliminary test for abusive drugs. While Screening economically excludes drug use in the bulk of cases, a positive screen requires validation for admissibility in legal proceedings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show tentative positivity in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower density than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug analysis is exceedingly tough, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can offer a timeline of drug consumption over a set interval, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are frequently costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and unique differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While regularly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
