Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clarksville, Maryland. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with testing facilities available in cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas is needed for testing. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing practices have increasingly adopted hair follicle screening methods. A growing number of organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers often rely on hair follicle tests. A key advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, typically spanning up to 90 days, as it involves a supervised collection process and is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended record of alcohol and drug usage, capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental testing, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair is an option. When mentioning head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial steps of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This step entails verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While this step is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, positive results from the screening need validation for legal admissibility. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If screening results are preliminarily positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex to conduct.

The confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to alter: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage patterns: It can outline a history of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Clarksville, MD, hair follicle testing triumphs over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing offers a more extensive detection window, providing a clearer picture of substance use history. This higher level of accuracy assures employers of making well-informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Clarksville, MD is its extended detection period of drug use, up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain an in-depth understanding of an individual's substance use history, as opposed to shorter-term analyses. The prolonged detection timeframe provides a comprehensive insight into an employee's or candidate's past drug habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in Clarksville, MD minimizes risks related to sample tampering, ensuring credible outcomes for all tests. Due to the nature of its sampling process, it's incredibly difficult for individuals to alter their results, leading to a higher confidence level in the outcomes. Such reliability is vital for maintaining the integrity of drug testing programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
