Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Cornersville, Maryland. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such services, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from your head or body. Hair tests are versatile, allowing analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common technique for conducting drug testing. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are especially popular among firms with strict drug prohibition policies, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended drug use detection period, generally stretching up to 90 days and collected under observation, making it virtually foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a chronological record of substances by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair segment of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data required not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, further hair from the initial specimen is used for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations as compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the toughest methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credential and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug examinations can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
