Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Crofton, Maryland. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and has centers Nationwide, capable of conducting the procedure. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head’s crown or body is ideal. Hair tests check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored analyses.

Recently, the preference for utilizing hair follicle drug testing has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now often mandate a hair test over a urine test. This method benefits employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies and courts overseeing probation. The chief advantage is its extended drug detection duration of up to 90 days, and it’s hard to alter. However, for drugs consumed within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing is increasingly popular. Hair serves as a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. By acquiring hair near the scalp, it can offer around a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for mailing.

A sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands of hair (akin to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. When performing EtG, additional panels, or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is suitable. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for illicit drugs. While Screening serves as an economical approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen needs verification for court acceptance. Any presumptively positive Screening samples need secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen happens via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter detection windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's very challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
