Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Danville, Maryland. As specialists in hair drug and alcohol testing, we host numerous facilities nationwide, ready to conduct the necessary assessments. Hair measuring between 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is often adequate for testing. These evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized further.

The hair follicle drug test has gained traction as a prevalent method for substance testing in recent times. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are advantageous for zero-tolerance workplace policies, judicial mandates, or probation requirements. One distinct advantage is their extended detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring authenticity as these tests are hard to falsify. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying usage within a recent five-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly become recognized as a valuable method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair shaft. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, has tamper-resistant properties, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for initial testing and verification. For EtG tests, add-ons, or panel tests exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's best to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equal quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a specimen into a lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and ensures completion of any additional data needed beyond what an electronic chain of custody system offers.

Screening is a preliminary fast check for substances of misuse. While it is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug use for most samples, a screen yielding positive must be verified for court admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples at Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation where needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing detects substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing detects only within a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is significantly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring the results' credibility.
  • Shows historical usage: It provides an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair shade and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the context of drug testing in Danville, MD, hair follicle analysis offers distinctive advantages over traditional urine methods. Hair testing boasts a higher detection accuracy and reliability, mapping an individual's substance use history more effectively. With a significantly longer detection span, hair tests can unveil usage patterns stretching back months, unlike urine tests.

Traditional urine tests are limited in their detection window, usually flagging substance use only within recent days. In contrast, hair testing provides a historical overview by capturing substance evidence months after intake, aiding long-term evaluative needs significantly better. Thus, hair testing emerges as a robust alternative for consistent enforcement against substance misuse.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Danville, MD provides an extended window of detection, perfect for offering employers a long-term perspective on substance history. Capturing a timeframe of up to 90 days, these tests enable thorough evaluations, capturing casual or frequent drug use patterns among employees or job applicants.

Such a broadened detection horizon empowers organizations to make informed personnel decisions. As lifestyle trends or past consumption has potential lingering effects, hair follicle tests fill the analytical gap where short-term methods may miss volatility, ensuring vigilance and compliance in workplaces.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing emerges as a tamper-resistant solution in Danville, MD, seriously mitigating the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other methods, these tests are challenging to manipulate, providing accurate results that stand up under scrutiny.

When reliability is paramount, hair testing's robust design and collectible nature prevent common cheating attempts seen with other sample types. Its resistance to tampering ensures that results remain honest and credible, elevating trust in the testing outcomes for both employer and employee.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
