Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dargan, Maryland. If you require drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests and provides services across various cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific purposes.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug testing procedures has increased. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and those monitoring probation cases. The major advantage is an extended drug detection window, usually up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making tampering virtually impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Considered a robust method, hair testing is effective for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers in its fibers, offering an extended history of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug consumption over a period of roughly three months. It's easy to collect, resists tampering, and is simple to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accuracy. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair may be used. Our reference to head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in laboratories consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This stage certifies the sample as properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry outside the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for drug use. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug presence in most samples, confirming a positive Screening result is necessary for courtroom acceptance. Samples testing positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower levels of concentration compared to other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

To confirm a positive screening outcome, procedures using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are executed. Prior to confirmation, all positive samples undergo washing as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Allows for drug use detection extending up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Offers insight into drug consumption over time rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Comparatively more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often misrepresents the procedure, which analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
