Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Deal Island, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing ensures efficient service across testing centers nationwide. In most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances tailored to your needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance checks. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer this over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are useful for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases. These tests offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are very challenging to manipulate. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are considered the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures signs of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equal body hair amount is suitable. Head hair implies only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test sample in a lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's framework, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any essential data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening is a swift preliminary evaluation for abuse substances. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most cases, any screen indicating a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

Should a sample be suspect-positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair in much lower quantities compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All supposed positive samples are cleaned as necessary before verification. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a more restricted detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, hence results are more reliable.
  • Offers usage history: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests are usually pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug breakdown products in hair.

Note: While named "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
