Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dickerson, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities throughout the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from your head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other special testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. They are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation services due to their longer detection span—up to 90 days. Hair tests are conducted under supervision, making them nearly impossible to falsify. Urine tests, however, remain best for identifying drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a potent method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by securing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month window of detection for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG add-ons or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a matching amount of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation to be legally acknowledged. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples testing presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: It can trace a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Dickerson, MD, the advantages are clear. A key benefit of hair testing lies in its superior detection accuracy and long-term reliability. As urine tests can only pinpoint recent drug consumption, hair testing provides a detailed overview spanning up to 90 days. This extended window helps employers make informed decisions with confidence.

A significant factor that makes hair testing more reliable than urine testing is the difficulty to manipulate the test results. Sophisticated methods safeguard hair follicle analysis from tampering, offering a layer of trust crucial to accurate drug testing. This incontrovertible accuracy reassures employers about their drug-free workplace policies, ensuring they adhere to high standards of safety and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a prominent advantage over other methods in Dickerson, MD. Hair tests can reveal drug use over a 90-day period, offering a thorough perspective on an individual's substance use history. This broad time frame provides employers with an essential tool for evaluating both potential and current employees.

Employers can use this extended detection window to make well-informed hiring decisions and to ensure ongoing compliance with workplace policies. The ability to assess long-term drug use rather than just recent incidents offers a comprehensive understanding of an individual's behavior, thus contributing to a safer work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Dickerson, MD, stands out for its tamper-resistant qualities, effectively minimizing the risk of sample manipulation. This testing method ensures accuracy and reliability by making it nearly impossible to alter the results. As the test requires actual hair samples, the chances of tampering or adulteration are significantly reduced.

With hair testing, businesses can have confidence in the legitimacy of the results. Ensuring that the sample remains unaltered throughout the collection and analysis process offers peace of mind to employers. This reliability is crucial for maintaining drug-free workplace policies and for reinforcing the trustworthiness of the drug testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
