In Dublin, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited specializes in hair assessments, with test centers across American cities ready to conduct your test. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized testing options tailored to your needs.

The hair follicle drug test method has gained prominence in recent years for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer it over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation frequently utilize hair follicle drug tests. This method's main advantage is an extended drug use detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use, within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures markers within its fibers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of roughly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands, roughly the thickness of a no. 2 pencil, close to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or when exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for yielding a drug test result consists of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of initially entering a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data input not part of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use for most samples, any positive result must be validated to be legally admissible. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples that preliminarily tested positive are washed, as needed. The entirety of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, follows the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is very difficult, thus ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical insights: Showcases a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing types.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test is sometimes called a "hair follicle test", but it actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
