Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Elk Mills, Maryland. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers available in cities across the country that can administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing methods.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved the hair follicle drug test. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for a hair drug test in lieu of a conventional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation programs utilize hair follicle drug tests. The significant advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window for drug use, which generally spans up to 90 days, collected under observed conditions, making it virtually impossible to manipulate. Despite this, when detecting drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances through the capture of biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When samples are procured near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 90-day detection span for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately resembling a #2 pencil's girth) nearest to the scalp equals 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a comparable volume of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Conversely, body hair pertains to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The quartet of primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug-test result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's workflow. It encompasses ensuring the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial rapid detection for illicit drugs. Although Screening is an economical strategy to exclude drug presence in the bulk of samples, a positive result needs authentication to be valid in legal scenarios. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen tests potentially positive in Screening, more hair is gathered from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are separated from hair at notably minute concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis as the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can disclose drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves extremely difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Traces usage history: It depicts a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug-testing approaches.
  • Result disparities: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
