Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Essex, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair testing, with facilities available in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body can be used for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are favoring hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests support employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary cases. A primary advantage is its extended detection ability, identifying drug use up to 90 days, being conducted in a supervised manner, and being highly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drug use in the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for roughly up to a three-month period. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp region yields 100mg, considered the ideal sample for initial screening and verification. For EtG, additional elements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In reference to head hair, this pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result through the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into the laboratory system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not available through an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. Though Screening is an economical approach to discount drug use in most samples, to be court-admissible, a positive result requires confirmation. Any sample testing positive in Screening needs further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at much reduced concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening more complex to perform.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The overall process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to three months, while urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers usage history: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing is Superior? In Essex, MD, many choose hair tests over urine testing due to their extensive detection periods. While urine tests are common, they only detect substances used in the past five days, missing recent activity. Hair tests offer a comprehensive view by analyzing a person’s drug use history over three months.

Employers and courts find hair testing indispensable for such transparency in Essex, MD. With its longer detection window and lower risk of manipulation, hair follicle testing provides enhanced accuracy. It's a method that's becoming the standard in cases mandating drug-free environments, offering accuracy that urine testing< cannot match.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Windows set hair follicle testing apart in Essex, MD. Whereas other methods capture short-term drug use, hair testing identifies substance activity across a 90-day period. This feature is instrumental for employers seeking comprehensive insight into an individual's history.

By utilizing hair tests, organizations gain access to a much broader timeline of an applicant or employee's drug or alcohol use. This expanded window enables a thorough understanding, supporting informed decisions for those in charge of maintaining a secure and drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Methods are vital for dependable outcomes in Essex, MD. Hair follicle tests hold strong against potential sample tampering, ensuring that results are both consistent and trustworthy. This tamper resistance is crucial for employers, law enforcement, and courts requiring defensible testing methods.

Compared to urine tests, which are susceptible to dilution or substitution, hair tests offer greater security. By nearly eliminating manipulation risks, hair follicle testing stands as the most reliable option, offering unquestionable results each time it’s implemented.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
