Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Ewell, Maryland. When a hair drug or alcohol screening is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to perform hair tests. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is utilized. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or support tailored hair examination requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug screening methods. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for hair drug tests over conventional urine ones. This test is ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationers. The main advantage of a hair drug test is its extensive detection duration, spanning up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making tampering almost impossible. Yet, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a powerful tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch amount of about 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any extra data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick check for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening result confirmation is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have briefer detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair drug test is notably difficult to cheat, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical information: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ewell, MD, hair follicle testing sets itself apart from traditional urine testing in several key ways. It offers enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, making it a preferred method for many. While urine tests may cover recent substance use, hair tests provide a broader view of drug history, which is essential for thorough investigations.

For those in Ewell, MD, choosing hair follicle testing over urine analysis can lead to more comprehensive and reliable results. Hair tests outperform by uncovering substance use over extended periods, thus enabling a deeper insight into an individual's drug history, which is particularly useful for employers with stringent drug-free workplace policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Ewell, MD offer an extensive detection window, capable of identifying substance use up to 90 days prior. This is significantly longer than other testing methods, providing employers and authorities with a more comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance use history. The extended detection period is invaluable for making informed decisions regarding employment or legal matters.

In Ewell, MD, the prolonged detection window of hair testing is a noteworthy advantage. The ability to trace substances back three months offers a thorough evaluation of an applicant’s or employee's drug history, essential for maintaining a safe and compliant environment. This extended period surpasses other methods, which are limited in their scope of detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
