Accredited Drug Testing in Federal Hill, Maryland offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. We specialize in hair drug and alcohol testing across numerous cities nationwide. Generally, to facilitate a hair test, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is adequate. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug testing methods. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. They serve entities with strict anti-drug policies, the justice system, and those on probation. Their key advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, offering an almost foolproof process. Yet for recent 5-day drug usage detection, urine tests still lead.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of roughly three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection is easy, quite resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen accurately. In situations where scalp hair is absent, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. Head hair is specifically referring to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially managed in the laboratory system. Essential tasks include ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and filling in any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in a majority of samples, confirmed results are necessary for court admissibility. Samples yielding a positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample yields a positive result in Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen and set aside for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations lower than in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting hair drug screening as one of the most complex methodologies available.

Confirmations of positive results are carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. All samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a much shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks drug history: It identifies drug consumption patterns over extensive periods rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Limited recent detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variations in growth can impact metabolite concentrations found in hair.

Note: The test often called as “hair follicle test” actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
