In Fort Meade, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available nationwide. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for screening. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation. The major advantage lies in its extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is difficult to tamper with. For detecting drug use within a 5-day span, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method uses hair to capture biomarkers, offering an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use in the fibers of the growing strand. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal drug or alcohol usage for a period of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, the same quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary handling of a sample within a lab's system, confirming that it was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any data not included in the electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug use. Although economical for negating drug usage in most samples, positive results from Screening require confirmation for legal admissibility. Positives in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

If a positive result occurs during Screening, more hair is collected from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are removed from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug testing as a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes is achieved with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, any samples with positive results undergo necessary washing. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus increasing result reliability.
  • Gives usage history: It shows patterns of drug consumption over an extended duration, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Fort Meade, MD: Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in its capacity to detect substances over a longer duration. Unlike urine tests, which are typically limited to recent drug use, hair testing provides a holistic view of an individual's drug history. Hair tests present a less invasive collection process compared to urine tests and reduce the risk of tampering. With observation during sample collection, results are rendered more reliable. This method's ability to trace drug use extends significantly beyond the limitations of urine testing, positioning it as a more effective tool for chronicling substance abuse trends.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
