Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Fruitland, MD. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, and we have facilities nationwide available to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. This shift sees many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opting for hair tests over the standard urine ones. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases. A major advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use within an extended 90-day window through monitored collection, making it hard to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain the top choice for detecting recent drug use within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed, long-term record of drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When sampled close to the scalp, it can reveal a 3-month timeframe of drug activity. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal chances of tampering, and it is easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) nearest to the scalp is needed to obtain 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and verification. For EtG, added analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result process includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any required data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates non-positive samples, a positive result necessitates further confirmation for judicial acceptance. Presumptive positives in Screening require additional verification.

In the case of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or saliva), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging technique.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples are washed prior to Confirmation when necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection timeframe: Hair drug tests reveal drug use over a 90-day span, in contrast to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Hard to evade: Overcoming a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides data on drug usage trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair within around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differ and can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine testing in Fruitland, MD, brings significant benefits. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability, surpassing traditional urine tests. With an extended detection window, it outperforms urine tests in identifying use over longer periods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
