Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Gambrills, Maryland. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise is in hair testing, with centers available in all cities across the nation. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or elsewhere on the body is typically required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored with other hair testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists increasingly prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and probation agencies use these tests. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that is nearly infallible. However, for screening drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and easy for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, added tests, or panels above 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair may be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial insertion of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug involvement in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration notably lower than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Any positive result during Screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Fraud resistance: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers an insight into drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing methods in Gambrills, MD, hair follicle tests outshine traditional urine tests. Hair tests provide a superior detection period and enhanced reliability. Unlike urine tests, which offer a limited detection window, hair testing covers a much more extended timeframe, allowing for a more comprehensive evaluation of an individual's drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Gambrills, MD, delivers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, unlike other tests. This duration offers employers a broad picture of an employee or applicant's substance use patterns. By capturing long-term drug usage, this testing method facilitates informed decisions based on a detailed substance history profile.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Gambrills, MD, hair follicle testing stands out as a tamper-resistant method, drastically minimizing the chance of sample alteration. As it's challenging to adulterate a hair sample compared to others, businesses and legal entities favor this test for its reliability. The unassailability of the sample ensures results that are beyond dispute.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
