Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug assessments in Golden Beach, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis. We have testing centers in every city nationwide capable of performing a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been the method of choice for drug assessments. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer a hair drug test over the standard urine test. Hair drug tests are utilized by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection window, usually reaching up to 90 days, making it hard to cheat. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for detecting substance use of drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the growing fibers, hair presents an extended history of alcohol and drug consumption. Collected close to the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for substances. Hair is easy to gather, resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is preferred. The specimen's weight should be checked using a jeweler's scale. If head hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Note that head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab procedure for a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it cost-effectively excludes drug use for most samples, a positive finding must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Any samples indicating potential positivity must undergo further verification.

For presumptively positive samples, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples indicating positivity are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Due to the difficulty of falsifying hair drug tests, results are notably reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become visible in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests," this analysis evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
