Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle testing in Green Valley, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in hair testing, with locations Nationwide fully equipped to conduct a hair analysis. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair testing over conventional urine testing. This method is particularly employed by employers with stringent drug policies, legal courts, and probationers. Hair tests boast a longer detection period, generally up to 90 days, using an observed collection method, making them hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the hair shaft, hair reveals an extended history of substance use. A sample gathered near the scalp can reflect drug and alcohol intake for up to about 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively tough, and it is effortlessly transportable.

An ideal hair sample consists of a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair suitable for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or substances exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It's beneficial to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifies only the hair on the scalp. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental phases in scientifically evaluating a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Initially, Accessioning processes the sample into a laboratory's system by confirming proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most cases, a positive screen mandates verification for legal acceptability. Samples indicating presumptive positives require a follow-up confirmation.

If a screen reveals a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. Here, substances are drawn out of hair at a significantly lesser concentration compared to alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex method to execute.

Positive screening confirmations utilize GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing as necessary. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Capable of detecting drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides an overview of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent detection: Substances typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result diversity: Variables such as hair color and personal growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
