In Hampstead, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our centers span across all major cities nationwide. For effective testing, ensure the presence of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body. Hair samples can be analyzed for a variety of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular over recent years. It is now the preferred method by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests. Offering a detection period of up to 90 days, hair tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies. Although nearly impossible to tamper with, urine tests still remain effective for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to around three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory stages for processing a drug test result encompass four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry absent an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment of substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, court-admissible positive screens necessitate confirmation. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening demand a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is notably complex.

Using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS, Confirmation is carried out for any positive screening outcome. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation if required. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited against ISO/IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Up to 90 days of drug use can be detected through hair drug tests, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, thus making results more reliable.
  • Reflects past usage: Shows a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than just recent history.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become visible in hair typically 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Compared to other testing methods, hair drug tests tend to be costlier.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth rates can alter concentrations of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Hampstead, MD, with several key advantages. The detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests are notably superior, providing detailed insights into an individual's drug use. While urine tests cover a shorter detection window, hair tests extend up to 90 days, capturing a broader substance abuse picture.

Urine testing, though standard, falls short in historical drug use detection. Hair testing, on the other hand, reveals long-term substance use patterns. It remains the preferred choice for employers and legal systems seeking comprehensive analysis of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

In Hampstead, MD, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, up to 90 days, unmatched by other methods. This long-term insight gives employers a comprehensive perspective of an individual's substance history, invaluable when screening potential hires or monitoring current employees.

The significant detection span not only identifies recent drug use but also offers a historical view. This capacity to map out extended patterns of substance use is crucial for maintaining workplace integrity and ensuring informed hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Hampstead, MD, present a tamper-resistant solution for drug testing. This method significantly reduces the potential for sample adulteration, a common issue with other testing forms. The integrity of hair follicle samples ensures trustworthy and unquestionable results.

By choosing a testing method difficult to cheat, employers and institutions gain confidence in the accuracy of their drug-screening processes. Such reliability reinforces trust in workplace and judicial decisions, where accurate substance history is crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
