In Harmony, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive services for hair follicle drug assessments. Whether opting for drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our specialty lies in this method. With testing sites in every city nationwide, we’re equipped to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or other body parts suffice, offering analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

The trend in drug testing has shifted increasingly toward hair follicle methods. Employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer this to the traditional urine tests. These evaluations are pivotal for employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probation services. The key advantage is its extended detection span, often reaching up to 90 days, with samples collected in a monitored process, making evasion nearly impractical. For recent substance use within 5 days, urine tests still reign supreme in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for spotting alcohol and drug usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected from close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axiliary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial management of a specimen within a lab’s framework. This involves confirming that the specimen was aptly secured and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial cursory check for abuse drugs. Though Screening is a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for it to stand in court. Any samples suggesting positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample suggest positivity during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to perform.

Verification of any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suggesting positivity are washed before the confirmation process, if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared with urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It proves exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Yields historical data: It offers a record of drug use over a time frame, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug evaluations tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Diversity in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
