Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Harwood, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans throughout various cities across the nation, with centers ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, with the option for body hair as well, to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methodologies. The reliability of hair testing over typical urine tests has become favored among employers, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors. With a substantially extended detection window of up to 90 days, this method is nearly impervious to tampering, making it ideal for zero-tolerance policies. Nonetheless, urine tests maintain accuracy in detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands hold biomarkers, giving insight into long-term drug and alcohol consumption by embedding them within the growing hair's fibers. When closely collected to the scalp, hair facilitates an alcohol and drug detection timeframe of up to roughly three months. It is easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample consists of approximately 200 strands of hair (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) from near the scalp, yielding 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair alone, while "body hair" encompasses types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main activities: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially integrating a specimen into the laboratory’s system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry tasks not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial assessment aimed at detecting drug misuse. While screening is an affordable approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screening findings require confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples with a presumptive positive screening result necessitate secondary verification.

For samples showing presumptive positives during screening, additional hair from the original sample is extracted and prepared specifically for the Extraction phase. Hair allows drug removal at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), hence it poses the most challenging methodology to execute.

All positive screenings are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As needed, presumed positive samples undergo water rinsing before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • High resistance to deception: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical usage insights: It unveils a drug use pattern across a timeframe instead of merely highlighting recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs generally require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically entail more costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite often being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Harwood, MD benefits immensely from the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests. By providing enhanced detection capabilities, this method excels in identifying drug use with greater reliability than urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
