Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug verification in Ilchester, Maryland. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty in hair assessments will serve you well. We maintain testing facilities nationwide, including every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are necessary, allowing tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various custom options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Numerous employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are preferring hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. This method is favored by employers with strict prohibition policies, judiciary systems, and those on probation. Its main advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, preventing manipulation and ensuring reliability. Nonetheless, urine tests remain superior for uncovering substance use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over an estimated three-month period. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equating to the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for screening and validation. In cases involving EtG, test add-ons, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's preferable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be acquired. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This comprises verifying the correct sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry lacking an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While this is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumptively positive during Screening mandate secondary validation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen to be prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as essential. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have a more limited detection duration.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thus enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination assesses the hair strand rather than the scalp-embedded hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine tests in Ilchester, MD, hair analysis emerges as superior. The notable advantages of hair testing include better detection accuracy and longer tracking periods. Unlike urine tests, which are more prone to manipulation, hair tests offer greater reliability in detecting substances. This makes them a preferred choice for employers serious about maintaining a drug-free environment and adhering to stringent screening protocols.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Ilchester, MD provides an extended detection window unlike any other. This method can reveal drug use that occurred over the past 90 days, offering a profound insight into an individual's habits. For employers, this broader window aids in assessing potential and current employees' adherence to substance policies. It's a comprehensive approach that surpasses the reach of traditional methods, such as urine testing, which have shorter detection periods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Ilchester, MD, hair follicle tests provide a nearly tamper-resistant testing method. This significantly reduces the risks associated with sample adulteration, ensuring the reliability and integrity of results. With hair testing, employers and authorities can confidently rely on the outcomes for decision-making, knowing that the risk of manipulation is minimal and results are unquestionable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
