Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Kennedyville, Maryland. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, we specialize in hair testing and operate testing facilities in every city across the country capable of performing a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary, usually taken from the crown or body. Tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common when conducting drug assessments. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair over standard urine tests. This method benefits employers who enforce zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases. Its advantage is a more extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making cheating nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use in the preceding 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying substance consumption. The hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period of roughly three months. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample in a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly packaged and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, quick check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, confirmation is necessary for any positive screen to be legally admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positives during Screening must go through further verification.

If a screen indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare it for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Records historical use: Creates a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", this actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Kennedyville, MD

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in several key ways. This method provides a broader detection window and is less invasive, making it more suitable for varied testing needs. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
