In Kingsville, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle testing services. Individuals needing drug or alcohol testing will find Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair testing highly beneficial, with facilities available nationwide. Test centers demand 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or body. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized tests.

Hair follicle testing has become a preferred method in recent years for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors increasingly opt for hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are valuable for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationary monitoring due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection integrity, and difficulty to tamper with, making them less vulnerable to manipulation. However, in detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Within the strands of growing hair, biomarkers of alcohol and drugs are encapsulated, offering a prolonged timeline of substance use. Sampling hair near the scalp permits a detection span of roughly 90 days for such substances. This method of collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG additions and tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be sampled. Note that when discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair comprises other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample initially enters the laboratory's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data beyond an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for abused substances. This cost-efficient step is effective for most samples, but any detected positive requires confirmation for legal standards. Those that test positive during Screening necessitate a further confirming analysis.

Should a presumptive positive arise at the Screening stage, additional hair from the sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any initial positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples found to be presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as the situation demands. Throughout the process from Accessioning to Confirmation, there is adherence to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, a longer duration than urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: The difficulty in tampering with hair drug assessments enhances their accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides an historical overview of substance use over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A lag of about 5-7 days exists before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair analysis generally incurs more expenses compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is misleading as the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
