In Kitzmiller, Maryland, accredited drug testing facilities offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For any hair drug or alcohol screening needs, these centers excel in hair-based testing and are available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp, but body hair can be used too. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly prevalent over the past years. It is preferred by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. This type of test is selected by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, including employers and legal bodies. Its main advantage is in providing a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that minimizes cheating risks. However, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about a 3-month detection period. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively immune to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be gathered. In referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair signifies all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although screening offers a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, in order for a positive screen to be recognized in court, confirmation is needed. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Increased tamper resistance: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can highlight a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kitzmiller, MD, hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine tests for several reasons. Hair tests offer a longer detection period, identifying drug use over three months, while urine tests detect only recent use. This extended window provides a more comprehensive view of an individual's history, making it a more reliable method. Additionally, hair testing's accuracy reduces false negatives, ensuring truthful results.

Furthermore, hair follicle testing eliminates common urine test issues such as sample tampering and dilution. Its resistance to common manipulation tactics enhances the credibility and trustworthiness of the results. For employers in Kitzmiller, MD, this means fostering a safer, drug-free environment, with increased assurance that employees adhere to company policies. Consequently, it places hair testing at the forefront for stringent drug use monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most compelling advantages of hair follicle testing in Kitzmiller, MD is its extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, it can identify drug use up to 90 days prior. This wide window offers a comprehensive overview of a person's substance history, providing valuable insights for employers making informed hiring or retention decisions. Moreover, this longer period enhances the ability to monitor ongoing compliance with drug-free workplace policies.

Employers rely on this thorough detection capability to ensure employees or candidates meet company standards over time. Hair follicle testing provides a more complete assessment, distinguishing between chronic and occasional use. This capacity to track long-term patterns is invaluable for maintaining a robust drug-free program, positioning hair tests as a critical tool in employee screening methods across Kitzmiller, MD.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Kitzmiller, MD significantly minimizes the risk of sample tampering, a common issue in other drug testing methods. The tamper-resistant nature of hair tests instills confidence among employers who require assurance in their drug testing protocols. By virtually eliminating the opportunity for deceit, these tests ensure that the detection of drug use is truthful and accurate. This reliability is essential for regulatory compliance and managing a workforce that's committed to safety and productivity, making hair follicle testing a preferred option in Kitzmiller, MD.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
