Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Leitersburg, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities spread across cities nationwide ready to conduct hair evaluations. Typically, hair samples from the crown, at least 1.5 to 2 inches long, are required, but body hair may be used in specific scenarios. Hair testing can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing modules.

Over recent years, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated the hair follicle drug test. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests to traditional urine examinations. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug use regulations, courts, and probation authorities frequently select hair follicle tests for their longevity in detecting drug consumption — as much as 90 days, facilitated by a meticulously observed collection process, leaving little room for manipulation. However, for discerning drug use within a five-day window, the urine test still reigns supreme in precision.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and confirmation. For testing involving EtG, additional panels, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is recommended. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis for a drug test outcome involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing phase where a laboratory inputs a sample into their system. This stage includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not already handled by an automated chain of custody system.

Screening is an expedited initial evaluation for substance abuse. Although it serves as a budget-friendly measure to generally dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples that yield presumptive positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug testing presents a greater challenge compared to other methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive screening is executed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby increasing accuracy.
  • Insights on historical usage: It may reveal usage patterns over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable within hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests come at a higher cost compared to other testing options.
  • Result variation: Differences in hair color and individual growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the actual test is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Leitersburg, MD, hair follicle testing offers superior detection over traditional urine tests. Hair tests extend the detection window, spotting substance use for up to 90 days, while urine tests primarily capture recent drug use. Hair testing is less prone to manipulation, capturing a comprehensive history compared to urine's limited timeframe.

The reliability of hair tests stems from their method of utilizing protein in hair strands to lock in drug metabolites. This provides a stable testing medium, unlike urine tests susceptible to adulteration. These factors showcase the unmatched accuracy of hair follicle testing in drug and alcohol detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
