Experiencing comprehensive hair follicle drug tests is made simple by Accredited Drug Testing in Level, Maryland. If your requirement is for a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities across all U.S. cities. Hair from the crown or body, if measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is typically sufficient. These tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

The practice of drug testing has evolved, increasingly favoring hair follicle analysis. A significant number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. This approach appeals to employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and those managing probation scenarios. The standout advantage of hair testing is the extended 90-day detection window, conducted under supervision and resistant to tampering, though urine tests remain optimal for recent usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and substances. It is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This stage involves validating that the sample was properly sealed and sent, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, cost-effective assessment for substances of abuse. Although it efficiently eliminates the possibility of drug use in most samples, a positive result from screening must be corroborated for it to be legally admissible. Any samples testing presumptive positive require further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is obtained from the initial specimen for Extraction. In the Extraction phase, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a wash as needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating with hair drug tests is notably challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over a duration, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Level, MD, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over more traditional urine tests. With superior detection accuracy, this method provides a reliable evaluation of drug use tendencies. The detection window is significantly longer, offering a better understanding of an individual's substance involvement compared to the more limited urine test scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
