Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Libertytown, Maryland. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we operate testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5-2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed, and hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle testing. Many employers and legal professionals prefer this to standard urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, hair tests offer a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, and are difficult to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. The fibers of growing hair strands capture biomarkers, offering a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol intake. If sampled from the scalp area, hair testing can reveal substance use history spanning up to about three months. This process is easy to administer, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

By obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, a 100mg sample can be collected, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation analysis. In cases requiring EtG, additional panels, or testing beyond 10 panels, a sample amount of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, a similar volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, underarm).

Overview of Procedure

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within the laboratory system. This step involves confirming that the sample has been sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for potential drug presence. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most cases, a positive result from Screening needs further confirmation to stand in court. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening demand additional verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drug compounds are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than in other testing methods (like urine or oral samples), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized to meet both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, exceeding the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thereby enhancing result credibility.
  • Offers historical insights: This method reveals patterns in drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Compared to alternative testing methods, hair drug tests are generally more expensive.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze hair strands rather than the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Libertytown, MD, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing, renowned for its comprehensive screening capabilities, maintains a longer detection window, providing clearer insights into a person's substance use history, which urine testing often overlooks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
