Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lusby, Maryland. If you're seeking hair drug or alcohol testing, rely on Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair analysis. With facilities located in every major city across the nation, conducting a hair test is simple. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in drug testing methodologies. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analysis over the traditional urine test. These tests are ideal for workplaces with strict drug policies, the justice system, and probationary programs. Hair follicle tests offer the advantage of a prolonged detection period, up to 90 days, and involve directly supervised sample collection, making them nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for tracking drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When procured directly from the scalp, hair can deliver up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment for a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This step validates that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data processing absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to disregard drug consumption for most samples, any positive screening demands confirmation to be legally valid. Samples marked as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive at the Screening phase, supplementary hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why the hair drug test is one of the most challenging methodologies.

Verification of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo a wash before confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Resilience against deception: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in growth can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the subscalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
