In Lynch, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing with centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested. Our analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Over recent years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly preferred hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse authorities choose hair tests over urine. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs adopt hair tests for their longer detection period, typically up to 90 days. It's a supervised process, obviating cheating. Yet, urine remains best for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Using hair for testing has emerged as a compelling way to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis for a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample enters a laboratory's workflow. This step includes confirming proper sample sealing and shipping, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial assessment for substance abuse indicators. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to negate drug use for most samples, a positive outcome demands verification to be upheld in court. Screening presumptive-positive results necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is the most intricate to execute.

Positive screening findings undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation where necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug usage spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, leading to reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage indication: The test illustrates a timeline of drug usage, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent consumption: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing incurs higher costs than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair strand itself rather than the follicle underlying the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lynch, MD triumphs over traditional urine tests owing to superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair tests capture drug use over a longer duration, providing greater insight. This longer detection window allows employers to assess more accurately an individual's substance use history.

While urine tests can detect recent substance use, hair tests offer a broader view. They provide unbeatable detection accuracy and reduce the risk of sample tampering, ensuring a credible testing process.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method in Lynch, MD provides an extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This long span allows employers a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug history. Unlike shorter-span tests, this expansive period unveils patterns of recurrent drug use.

Employers can rely on hair tests to capture detailed substance use histories that urine tests simply cannot provide. This comprehensive tracking is invaluable for policies targeting long-term drug abstinence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Lynch, MD, hair follicle tests provide a nearly tamper-resistant method of testing. With rigorous collection processes, these tests significantly mitigate the risk of sample adulteration and manipulation, ensuring reliable and trusted results.

Unlike other testing types, hair samples cannot be easily adulterated or substituted, thereby strengthening the validity of the results. This makes them an excellent choice for effective and reliable drug screening programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
