Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Mapleville, Maryland. Whether seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we stand out with expertise in hair testing, offering centers nationwide ready to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and specialized hair test options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have grown in popularity as a method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, legal courts, and probation officers due to their longer detection period of up to 90 days, their monitored collection process, and their resistance to tampering. However, urine tests are more reliable for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust method, hair testing is pivotal for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline of substance use by immobilizing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, it provides an approximate 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to deliver.

An ideal sample, a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, suitable for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases in the lab's drug testing procedure consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This involves ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a swift initial examination for substance abuse. While it’s a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If positive results are presumptive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the primary sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at notably reduced concentrations compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Positive screening confirmations utilize GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All indicated positive samples receive a wash before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which feature shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Provides trends of drug usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detectability in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair testing usually incurs higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
