Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Midland, Maryland. Should you need drug or alcohol hair testing, we specialize in this area with centers across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair analyses can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for conducting drug screenings. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is preferred by employers with strict drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. One key advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use over a longer period, usually up to 90 days, through a monitored collection process, making it nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best option for screening recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. It provides a prolonged timeline of drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for roughly 3 months. It's easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, delivers 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and verification. For evaluations such as EtG, enhancements, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the laboratory comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary intake of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process entails confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid verification for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most cases; however, any positive screening needs further confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening process, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive outcomes from screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test ensures more dependable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals patterns of drug consumption over time rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: There is a delay of about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Usually, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing for drugs is proving to be superior in Midland, MD, when compared to traditional urine tests. With a longer detection window, it often reveals drug consumption that urine tests miss. This increased accuracy benefits employers who require adherence to no-drug policies. As a result, hair testing offers a more reliable indicator of a person's substance use history, profoundly impacting decision-making processes on the job.

The non-invasive nature of hair testing further adds to its benefits. While urine tests may catch drug use over a shorter timeframe, hair tests offer a deep dive into past substance use. This precise detection capability ensures comprehensive evaluations that extend far beyond the results urine testing can provide, contributing to safer and more productive environments.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Midland, MD, find hair follicle testing invaluable due to its extended detection window for drug use. Where urine tests show consumption over a few days, hair testing offers a 90-day history. This allows businesses to thoroughly understand an individual's substance use, influencing employment decisions with confidence.

Employers can leverage this information for both new hires and current employees to maintain a drug-free workplace. Offering a complete overview, hair testing provides insights that help preserve workplace integrity by identifying potential ongoing substance use challenges. This long-term visibility is critical for sustaining effective, productive, and safe work environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Midland, MD, hair follicle drug tests present a tamper-resistant alternative to traditional methods. The risk of adulteration with hair samples is significantly lower, ensuring reliable and authentic results. This gives employers and other stakeholders confidence in the integrity of the testing process, minimizing potential discrepancies in results.

The collection of hair samples occurs under strict supervision, further preventing any manipulation attempts. This provides a layer of trust for court matters, employment screenings, and professional assessments. Implementing this rigorous approach guarantees accuracy and decreases the possibility of flawed or compromised outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
