In Mount Briar, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair, our centers nationwide, including in every city, can accommodate this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is invaluable to zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation due to its longer detection window—typically up to 90 days—and near impossibility to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month window to detect alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panel tests exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Here, head hair strictly refers to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The examination of a drug test outcome in a lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in screening requires verification to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation when needed. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests detect drugs used in the past 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mount Briar, MD, hair follicle testing holds distinct advantages over urine testing. The detection window for hair testing can extend up to 90 days, while urine tests often miss longer-term drug use. This gives hair testing the edge in thoroughness.

Employers and institutions benefit from the comprehensive nature of hair testing. The longer detection period helps paint a more accurate picture of substance use, which urine testing cannot match.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Mount Briar, MD, extends the detection window to up to 90 days, providing a broader view of substance history. This duration starkly contrasts with urine testing, offering significant advantages for employers seeking thorough assessments.

The lengthened detection period allows employers to better evaluate a candidate's or employee's long-term substance use patterns, crucial for making informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Mount Briar, MD, hair follicle tests are noteworthy for reducing sample tampering risks. Their reliability ensures results that are trustworthy and nearly impossible to adulterate compared to other testing methods.

This tamper-resistant nature of hair testing lends credibility and confidence to testing outcomes, making them a robust option against cheating or manipulation attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
