Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can exhibit a detection period of roughly up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.
A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, the equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The drug testing process in the lab includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning concerns introducing a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step verifies correct sealing and shipping, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and completes any manual data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody.
Screening provides an initial evaluation for illicit substances. While efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, any positive findings necessitate confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positives in Screening must undergo further confirmation.
In cases of presumptive positives found during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods, like urine or saliva, making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique.
Positive results from Screening undergo confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
