Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in National Harbor, Maryland. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis and extensive network of testing centers throughout the nation ensures service availability. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body may be sufficient for analysis. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Over recent years, the preference for drug testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle testing. This method is favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts who often select hair testing over traditional urine tests. Organizations who enforce strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probationers, frequently employ hair follicle tests. They offer the key advantage of a longer detection period for substance consumption—usually up to 90 days. Observed collection makes cheating nearly impossible, although for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has increasingly become recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection timeline for alcohol and other drugs up to about 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The testing procedure in the laboratory for a drug test result includes four core phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system. This phase involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drugs of misuse. Though Screening serves as an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive outcome from a screening necessitates confirmation to be recognized in legal proceedings. Samples that result in a tentative positive in Screening call for further confirmation.

In the event a sample tests tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the primary sample and set up for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive result in Screening is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All provisional positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests, which have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is substantially tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It offers an overview of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair commences about 5-7 days after drug use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Inconsistent results: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although occasionally alluded to as "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle residing below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
