At the Naval Academy, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialization in hair testing spans testing facilities across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of either scalp or body hair is required. Hair reviews can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a more common approach for drug assessments. Various employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine exams. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and parolees. The advantage here is the extended drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and its collection under observation makes it challenging to manipulate. Nevertheless, for drug use within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline for alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the evolving hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal usage history of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (approximating a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp, will yield 100 mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and result confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and panels exceeding 10, 150 mg of the hair should be used. It is advised to use a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair solely pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test outcomes consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary process where a sample is introduced into a lab's framework. It involves ensuring the sample's security during sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening executes an immediate scan for substance abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly option to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples returning a positive Screening result demand secondary verification.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), justifying why hair drug testing is notably challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of all positive screening outcomes occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation gets evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is consistent with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use lasting up to 90 days, while urine tests present a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to fraud: It's exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Detailed usage record: It offers insights into drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incipient use undetectable: Drugs require about 5-7 days post-usage to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Variable findings: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the examination pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

At Naval Academy, MD, hair follicle testing provides an edge over traditional urine tests. It boasts superior detection accuracy and reliability, distinguishing itself with the ability to reveal drug use over a more extended duration. The method guarantees thorough checks by using a longer observation window compared to urine testing, making it a preferred choice for employers seeking clearer insight into substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
