Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Newark, Maryland. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, our specialization in hair-based testing is unmatched. Our testing facilities are available in cities across the nation. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body suffices. These tests can examine for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other requested analyses.

Recently, using hair follicle testing for drug analysis has gained traction. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are essential for organizations with no-drug policies, probation departments, and legal entities. These tests offer extensive detection up to 90 days, ensure observed sampling, and are almost impossible to tamper. Nonetheless, for usage detection within 5 days, urine tests maintain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, posing challenges to adulteration, and is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the hair specimen. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the laboratory refinement of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's framework. This step involves authenticating that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and encompassing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a confirmed positive requires further affirmation to hold in legal proceedings. Samples indicating presumptive positives in Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

For specimens with a presumptive positive result during Screening, increased portions of hair are extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex practice to conduct.

Verification of any positive screen result is achieved employing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Verification is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug screenings can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a brief detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating in hair drug screenings is exceptionally hard, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological data available: It provides insight into drug usage trends over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent use: An estimated 5-7 days are required before drugs become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are usually pricier compared to other drug detection techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Characteristics such as hair color and personal hair growth variation can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Newark, MD, hair follicle testing often outshines urine tests in terms of detection and reliability. The superior accuracy of hair tests is due to their ability to uncover drug use over time, compared to urine tests that only reveal recent consumption. This makes hair testing ideal for employers enforcing strict drug-free workplace policies.

Another advantage lies in the consistency of hair testing results. While urine tests can be influenced by recent hydration levels or attempts at dilution, hair testing remains unaffected. This factor not only enhances detection capabilities but also fortifies trust in the results provided by hair follicles over urine samples.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Newark, MD provides a significant advantage. Unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection timeframe, hair tests can identify drug use over the past 90 days. This longer window offers employers a detailed overview of an individual's substance use history.

For businesses, this means gaining a more comprehensive understanding of an applicant's or employee's habits, aiding in more informed hiring or disciplinary decisions. The extensive lookback period provided by hair tests ensures that substance use isn't overlooked, supporting healthier and safer work environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Newark, MD, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests is a game-changer. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests significantly cut down on the chances of sample tampering or adulteration. This ensures that results remain dependable and indisputable.

For individuals and organizations seeking accurate testing outcomes, the integrity and security provided by hair follicle samples is paramount. This method's robustness against tampering reinforces its preference, both in legal evaluations and employment drug screenings, guaranteeing unaltered results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
