Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in North Kensington, Maryland. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, you can count on Accredited Drug Testing. With centers across the nation, we specialize in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to your needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases rely on hair testing. Its key advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, with a secure collection and minimal risk of evasion. For screening recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strand. When cut near the scalp, it can provide up to a 90-day window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for sample weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a rapid preliminary check for drug abuse. While it is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, extra hair is drawn from the remaining specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair testing one of the most challenging methodologies to undertake.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are cleansed before verification as necessary. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can trace drug usage patterns over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing is often pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
