Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Laurel, Maryland. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with nationwide testing centers available to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair tests are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common for screening, often preferred over traditional urine tests. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and those on probation frequently use these tests. Hair follicle testing provides a broader detection window, typically up to 90 days, with monitored test collection, making cheating challenging. Urine tests, however, are most accurate for recent use, within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can retain a chronological history of substance use by embedding chemical markers within the fibers of the growing hair. By collecting samples near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and substances. The collection of hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and validating. For EtG, additional tests, and screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing in a lab encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the start of a sample's processing within a lab's framework. It involves ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not included in an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening provides a preliminary, rapid assessment for common drugs of abuse. Though economical for dismissing drug presence in most samples, positive screenings necessitate confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples found presumptively positive in Screening demand further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to undergo Extraction. Here, substances are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: It reveals drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair strand, not the follicle located under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
